Manchester Airport has upgraded its business intelligence (BI) systems to identify strategies and services that could increase the number of its passengers.
The UK's third largest airport has installed software firm MicroStrategy's Business Intelligence Platform to assess performance of different routes, airlines and flights and to present information to the airport's senior management team.
The software is being used to analyse information and historical data for more than 200,000 flights and 20 million passengers a year, helping the airport's management information team to build the case with airlines for new routes.
Airports generate revenues on a per-passenger basis as well as through facilities, explained Chris Moore, airport pricing manager at Manchester Airport.
"The airport makes money by charging the airlines a runway charge, as well as facilities and security charges per passenger," said Moore.
"So by assessing flight information and numbers of passengers we can look at ways for both the airport and airlines to make additional passenger revenues".
The airport is also looking to integrate data from other revenue-generating divisions, such as retail outlets and car parks, into the business intelligence database, added Moore. Improved services for customers are also on the agenda.
The BI system replaces separate operational spreadsheets and databases, providing senior management with reports on a daily, weekly and monthly basis plus any ad hoc queries.
"This provide us with a user-friendly way of accessing and presenting data," said Moore.
The system will complement the airport's content management systems, developed by IBM, which carry data to the airport's website, intranet and kiosks.
