Compuware has released a new framework to improve application quality by uniting application testing, quality assurance (QA) tools and a process methodology.
Compuware Application Reliability Solution (Cars) provides a framework for ensuring that software development complies with predefined quality processes.
The framework links Compuware's development, QA and operations tools, adding documentation and templates implemented within the company's OptimalFlow workflow engine.
Cars uses risk-based testing that gives higher priority to the most important system elements. It is installed at customer sites by consultants who create a QA centre, tailoring the process as needed.
In a survey of 125 IT and business executives by Forrester Research, sponsored by Compuware in support of Cars, 44 per cent indicated that they had experienced application failure in the past three years. Two-thirds of these had experienced material revenue loss as a result.
"The purpose of the research was to try and quantify the impact of poor quality," Vange Yianni, Compuware's UK technology manager, told vnunet.com.
Release cycles, time-to-market pressures and the squeeze on budgets all affected software quality, but projects were usually measured only as 'on time' or 'within budget', he explained.
"But how do you know if software is ready if you have no metrics?" he asked.
Three out of five of those surveyed had implemented QA tools, and just under half had quality processes.
But only 18 per cent said that they consistently followed both, although this group was much more satisfied with overall application quality.
Cars was originally developed for internal use, but Yianni said that it became a product as a result of customer interest. The software is licensed for a flat fee in multiples of three months.
