US reports said that Intel is still intent on shipping samples of its Merced 64 bit processor by year end and is on target to do so.
If true, that will create a clash with its existing 32-bit family as the roadmap shows a clear path to the year 2000, according to one Intel insider.
Instead, he said, Intel is likely to postpone sampling Merced to all but its most fervent of customers - chief of which is Dell Computers.
Neither Dell nor Intel were prepared to comment on unannounced products.
