Samsung has announced a new Digital Service Academy designed to boost the skills of its contracted service partners.
The academy will be run in partnership with Birmingham Metropolitan College, and will allow engineers to study for a City & Guilds approved NVQ Level 2 in Electrical and Electronic Servicing with specific Samsung wireless technology endorsements.
The course has been developed to help drive the government's skills agenda, and comprises work-based vocational modules and on-site college assessments aimed at increasing students' knowledge of interoperability as it applies to the latest wireless audiovisual technologies.
"We understand the value that a skilled, trained workforce can deliver back to the business, and look forward to welcoming Samsung engineers from across the UK," said Christine Braddock, principal and chief executive of Birmingham Metropolitan College.
James Lane, senior audiovisual manager in Samsung's service division, added that the initiative offers the company's partner community the chance to "stay ahead of the competition".
The courses will provide "cutting-edge training in new technology, a high-level of customer service and a greater understanding of the complexities of today's devices", according to Lane.
The government's skills agenda was formed in response to widespread concern about the lack of basic skills across the UK workforce, as highlighted in the 2006 Leitch Review of Skills.
Commentators have often bemoaned the lack of co-operation between industry and academic institutions, which they see as vital in improving the skills of the IT workforce, and Samsung's initiative could well spur other vendors to launch similar schemes.
The Digital Service Academy will officially open on 30 April.
