In a further streamlining of its activities, Motorola has split its semiconductor units into five separate parts in a bid to increase profits following a poor 1996.
Now Motorola will target units at the computing, wireless, automotive, consumer and networking markets and aims to satisfy demand fast rather than building units to order and expecting people to buy them.
The reorganisation follows similar moves in Motorola?s computer group some months ago but so far it has announced no job cuts.
Motorola has lost market share over the last year to both Ericsson and Nokia in the European mobile markets but is expected soon to announce its own answer to the Nokia 9000 in the shape of a palmtop device that includes computing facilities.
That news has caused Nokia to slash the price of its 9000 unit by several hundred pounds in anticipation of a Motorola launch and to pave the way for a future advanced model expected to be launched this autumn.
