Wireless Ethernets, rugged mobile computers and an NT Server supplied by Digital are helping the UK's challenge for the world land speed record.
High-speed trials on the Thrust Supersonic Car (SSC), got underway last week, in the Jafr desert, Jordan. The car, developed by Thrust SSC, is attempting to become the first car to break the sound barrier and go supersonic.
Thrust SSC is equipped with sensors that collect telemetry information such as facts and performance statistics during the trails. Five cameras mounted on the car give a view of how the run is actually going. This information is then uploaded directly onto Digital HiNote II mobile computers.
The data is transmitted to a control centre using a Digital RoamAbout wireless Ethernet connection, where it is collated and uploaded to the Thrust SSC UK web site (http://thrustssc.digital.co.uk) from a Digital Prioris NT server via a satellite link. From here the data is sent on to the Defence Research Agency in Chertsey and to Swansea University, where the car's aerodynamics are analysed on a Cray supercomputer.
