Aiming to shift many communications processing functions onto the host processor, Motorola has announces a software-based V.34 modem, the first in a planned series of host-based products.
The SM34DFV softmodem uses the computer's CPU to perform its functions. Motorola said the software option makes communications technology easier to upgrade, since no hardware swaps are necessary, and expects this to be a key selling factor as sites approach the transition to 56Kbps modems. "Motorola is harnessing the power of host processors in our first move to offer software communications solutions that ultimately could place many comms and multimedia functions, from videoconferencing to digital audio, on to the host processor," commented vice president Richard Leslie.
The softmodem operates at 28.8Kbps, with free upgrades to 33.6Kbps planned for next year. It includes support for an echo-cancelling speaker phone; answering machine that plays back through existing sound systems and speakers; group III, class one fax transmitting at 14.4Kbps; enhanced caller ID; and different ring tones for voice, data or fax calls.
The modem can run with Windows95 and there is the option of a Windows control panel applet for configuration and diagnostics.
In the future, the device will support higher level functions such as host-driven videoconferencing and Simultaneous Voice and Data (SVD) applications.
The product will be available to US OEMs in January and to European OEMs and large end users in the following quarter.
