Dotcom startups seem to have well and truly gone out of fashion as entrepreneurs sidestep the internet hype in favour of more 'practical' business options.
With hardly a dotcom idea in sight, students at this year's European Business Plan Contest in Barcelona steered away from web-based hype, and concentrated on a wider selection of ideas.
The competition, which began in 1993, sees students from around Europe presenting their business ideas to a panel. The offerings are judged on various merits, with the winner receiving £3000 prize money to help put their plans into practice.
With past competitions seeing hordes of dotcom submissions, such as 1998's www.igloo.com, this year was very different. Prospective ecommerce campaigns were replaced by non net-based ideas involving energy and wireless networking.
If the contest, held at the IESE Business School, is anything to go by, it looks like the dotcom 'route to riches' trend is a thing of the past.
The winner of this year's first prize was Ceres Power, showing off its energy-efficient 'fuel cells'.
