Deutsche Telekom is to launch a pilot Internet telephony service.
The project will be offered to 1,000 selected customers who will be able to make international calls up to 50% cheaper. Deutsche Telekom is the first major telco to offer Internet calls, which threaten to eat into the profits of conventional carriers.
The company would not confirm the project, but a spokesperson said Deutsche Telekom would ensure any Internet telephony customers would be able to retain their existing traditional telephones and numbers, but using the Internet to carry calls instead of existing telephone cables. Customers would use the service by dialling a special ID number.
