As many employees work outside your main office building, you need to find a way of keeping in touch, sharing files and enabling them to chat with colleagues. Unless they’re self-disciplined, making sure they are following your requirements and deadlines, isn’t easy.
The answer would be to use an instant messenger, but the various home-user clients are aimed at social networking. Worse, it’s quite hard to stop random users and customers from finding your username and sending you messages throughout the day. Skype is an obvious solution, but then it performs differently between operating systems and, as it’s a closed system, you can only use the Skype client for chatting between Skype-based users.
The other solution is to use your own instant messaging system and Campfire is supposed to be a solution for business users. You can chat through your web browser, between multiple users, share information and project images, as well as upload and make files available between people within your group.
Propane is a Mac-only tool that enables you to use the Campfire instant messaging network from within a desktop client, rather than a web browser.
