Broadband is getting so quick these days that even an 8MB connection could be shared between a few users. This means that if you’re in a student house, you could all chip in and share one broadband connection. However, what happens if you own the house (and the phone line), want to share the connection, but would like control over usage, connection and, most important, bandwidth.
You might own the phone line and the broadband connection, but if one of the connected users spends his time playing heavy-duty online games, the bandwidth is going to be saturated, even on the quickest connection. You need an application that limits bandwidth between each user, so no-one can hog the entire amount for themselves.
Rhino Software has recently updated their AllegroSurf tool, which will enable you to share one connection between a number of users. Ideal for a small school, café or a small office network. For home users, anyone sharing a house may find it useful. Amongst the many features, you can limit access to certain areas of the Internet, monitor the network activity, manually include or decrease the amount of bandwidth for each user and use Windows login to enable/disable users.
