After Apple maintained for years that there was nothing wrong with the batteries in early iPods, the company yesterday signed a settlement agreement with consumers that were affected by the flaw.
Some iPod batteries failed to power the devices for 10-12 hours, contrary to Apple marketing promises, and wouldn't last as long as users would expect, a lawsuit against the computer maker alleged.
Apple settled the suit promising to replace some iPods while other users can look forward to receiving a $50 credit on Apple products or $25 cash. The settlement could cost Apple up to $100m.
For all that's wrong with the litigious nature of today's society, at least it gives consumers a way to get back at companies that choose to treat their customers like filth.
Apple for years maintained that there was nothing wrong, telling consumers to just buy a new iPod. In 2003 it started offering a battery replacement service at a $99 fee. Apple could have saved itself a lot of trouble if had taken this seriously at the beginning.
