"Thanks to gold of Craigslist, ay?" said the person who just purchased my old iBook notebook computer. The transaction might have look a bit like a drug deal, taking place in the parking lot of a Silicon Valley bank, but it illustrates why Craigslist.org is such a huge success once it reaches a minimum volume in terms of visitors.
We were reminded about the site's success once again through a Cnet article that says nothing new but once again underlines the service's value.
Craigslist has killed the market for newspaper classified ads for houses, jobs and several other categories in its main markets. The site even had the power to rid New York of a nasty feature in its rental market where landlords would require tenants to pay a move-in fee.
And why? Because it works. And because there are no corporate fat cats getting rich of it. If there's a Craigslist in your town, check it out and give it a try. One you're hooked, you'll want nothing else.
