SAN FRANCISCO: Five years ago, the Salesforce Dreamforce conference was relatively small conference, taking place with little fanfare at Moscone West, the smaller third wing of San Francisco's convention centre.
Just half a decade later, things have certainly changed. What was once a niche conference for an up-and-coming firm has exploded into a massive 90,000 person gala which required an entirely block if downtown San Francisco to be shut down.
Just how rapidly has Dreamforce grown? Last year the show, already a formidable gathering, logged a total of 45,000 attendees. This year, reporters were advised to reach the convention centre one hour before the keynote address just to make sure they were able to get seats.
The explosion of Dreamforce reflects the rise of Salesforce as a company. Once considered a pioneer in the CRM industry, the company has seen its lineup grow across the full range of enterprise management, support and communications fields.
In 2012, the company showcased a number of features with the overall aim of improving the ability for employees, management, partners and customers to all connect and share their thoughts with one another.
Described as a "Facebook for the enterprise" by chief executive Marc Benioff, the updates included the general release of Touch.
Based on HTML5, the Touch platform allows developers to craft applications for touchscreen mobile devices. The company hopes that by creating a common platform which can run on multiple platforms without the need for individual ports on each platform.
Additionally, the company unveiled Chatterbox, a file sharing platform the company declared to be "Dropbox for the enterprise." The tool allows users to share and edit files form within the company's Chatter service.
In unveiling the lines, the company showed just how big it is now thinking. Benioff singled out many of the most popular services currently in use, then determined that Salesforce would look to create "enterprise" versions to run on its own platform.
Salesforce doesn't necessarily want to wipe out or replace the likes of Facebook and Dropbox, it merely wants to create a parallel world where similar platforms are just as popular, and run on the basic Salesforce platform.
