E-Enterprise suite delivered five months behind schedule.
Troubled enterprise resource planning vendor Baan has finally launched its electronic commerce suite, behind competitors such as SAP, Oracle and JBA, writes Joanne Wallen.
The E-Enterprise suite, which Baan originally planned for launch late last year, allows companies to extend their SAP or Baan ERP applications over the web. It comprises:
E-Sales, a business-to-business web storefront which allows customers to configure products and orders, and monitor order progress
E-Collaboration, allowing employees and business partners to collaborate and communicate online
E-Procurement, extending the Baan ERP procurement system across the intranet.
The ecommerce suite may be 'instrumental in ensuring Baan's survival', but will not single-handedly turn the company's fortunes around, said Jon Collins, an analyst at Bloor Research.
While there are some 'neat pieces' in Baan's offering, Oracle is 'way ahead of the curve' with its ecommerce software, especially in purchasing systems, said Simon Bragg, senior analyst for enterprise applications at researcher ARC. Baan's flagship customer Boeing has bought Oracle's purchasing software, he said.
Baan announced losses for the third consecutive quarter last week, losing $19m and recording heavily reduced licence revenues.
And although Baan sold 600 new ERP software licences in the last quarter, its licence revenues were down some 30%. Bragg said he is not convinced about Baan's ability to repeat its licence sales success in the rest of this year, although 'Baan has certainly taken measures to stem its losses'.
Baan says its E-Enterprise suite is fully integrated with the Baan ERP suite.
It is based on Microsoft Distributed interNetwork Applications architecture, runs on Windows NT and uses Microsoft BackOffice applications.
