AOL has acquired e-commerce tool provider Personalogic, to make online shopping easier and more customised.
In the latest in a wave of moves by portal companies to boost their e-commerce efforts, AOL will offer Personalogic?s interactive consumer buying guides. These help customers make decisions about a wide variety of products and services to suit their individual needs and tastes.
Members are asked questions to determine their needs and preferences, then these are evaluated to return a ranked list of best matches. The software also creates unique, personalised preference profiles that can be compared, saved or modified at a later date, covering a range of products from cars and computers to colleges and pets.
?We expect decision guides will be an important personalisation enhancement for millions of AOL members, making the interactive experience an even greater part of their daily lives,? said AOL's interactive services president Barry Schuler. ?Personalogic?s decision guides will give us additional, high value, targeted inventory for our advertising partners.?
Schuler also said key creative and technical staff from Personalogic will join AOL to help build new content and programming.
AOL will continue to develop Personalogic technology to make it compatible with search engines and other e-commerce tools and will seek new e-commerce applications to reap more revenue.
The guides will be integrated into key AOL products including its portal site aol.com, Digital City and Compuserve, plus international services including the UK.
"Already, members in the UK should be able to access PL guides such as 'Find the Ideal Dog Breed for You', which they can get to by going to the Lifestyle and Interests channel on AOL UK and then to 'pets'," explained Jim Whitney, vice president of corporate communications at AOL.
"As to when we'll roll out PL decision guides in other languages, that is still to be determined," he added.
