The Paris Chamber of Commerce has launched two CD-ROMs designed to assist trade between France and the UK. The first is a database containing the addresses of 40,000 French importers and exporters; the second provides a comprehensive competitor analysis for each of these companies. Virginie Blanchet of the Paris Chamber of Commerce told IWR: "The CD-ROMS are being launched in the UK first, at Online Information 99. They list the 40,000 most active importers and exporters out of the 1.5 million companies that trade in France. The information is based on the results of the 1998 Telexport survey that has been carried out annually for the last ten years among members of the French Chamber of Commerce. The CD-ROMs will be updated twice a year, with the next release scheduled for January 2000." The Competitor Analysis CD-ROM is designed to help UK companies who want to assess French competition or to find a suitable French business partner. In addition to basic contact information, the CD-ROM gives the key trading figures of each company, along with details of the products they export or import, and information about the countries where they trade. The Direct Marketing CD-ROM is designed to meet the needs of sales and marketing managers, giving more basic contact information to enable them to put together direct mail campaigns. This CD-ROM can also be used to identify sources of products and services in France. The names of 125,000 decision makers, directors, export managers and executives responsible for trade and import, finance, sales and marketing and administration are given, with telephone and fax numbers. Screen prompts and help instructions can be viewed in French or English and the user can choose to print labels alongside data in either language. Financial figures are given in either French francs or euros. The CD-ROMs feature a search engine, enabling lists of companies to be rapidly selected and sorted. The targeting of mailing lists can be refined using the Boolean 'and' / 'or' facility so that selections can be created with a combination of parameters. Another way to filter companies is by clicking on a map to select businesses geographically. Companies can also be selected by size, whether the feature if interest is size of work force or turnover. Industry and product sectors can be viewed using NAF (the French standard) or NACE (EC) classifications. The software can also identify companies that trade with any chosen country: over 12,000 of the listed French companies, for example, export to the UK. The types of products or services that the companies export or import can also be viewed. Information can be saved to disk, labels printed, lists created or company trading data exported for later reference. Data can be merged with existing mailing lists by exporting it in tabulated ASCII, dBase or Word merge formats. The disks are available in PC Windows format and can be viewed on 486 or Pentium-based machines. The programs can be run directly from the CD-ROMs, but work faster when installed onto the hard drive. The Direct Marketing CD-ROM costs 1000 francs to buy and the Competitor Analysis version costs 3000 francs. Purchasers of the CD-ROMs pay for any information they wish to use with a pay-as-you-go credit system. For example, 2000 credits cost 1400 francs and buy 1000 mailing labels.
