Mercury Interactive is set to jump on the application performance management bandwagon with a product designed to protect ecommerce companies from losing web shoppers frustrated by slow sites, writes Simon Goodley.
The testing company will release an application management product codenamed Topaz in September.
Application performance management measures the service levels that applications deliver to users. The area was a key topic at the UKCMG conference in York earlier this month.
Topaz will focus on the performance of web applications. According to a survey by researcher Jupiter Communications, 46% of users have been driven to alternative web sites because their preferred site failed to perform adequately. Forrester Research estimates that Dell loses $91,320 (£56,000) every hour its ecommerce applications are not running.
'Topaz will be an early entrant into a growing niche market,' said Graham Titterington, senior analyst at researcher Ovum. Another vendor in this space is software testing company Cyrano with its Webtester product.
Topaz works by taking the metrics from the application testing that takes place before it is deployed. Topaz fires off 'synthetic' transactions mimicking a web-user. If the response time approaches or exceeds that defined as acceptable, Topaz warns the administrator.
'Problems can occur with web-based business due to unpredictable changes such as user demand. So this sort of tool is very useful,' said Titterington.
Andy Crosby, Mercury's European field manager, said: 'If an application on the web goes down, companies lose money. Because of ebusiness, testing affects the top line.'
Mercury has not yet set prices for Topaz.
