Yahoo has signed a deal to provide mobile search software for T-Mobile in the
US.
The two companies announced on Thursday that Yahoo will license its
oneSearch
system for use in T-Mobile handsets. The search engine will be part of
T-Mobile's web2go mobile internet service.
OneSearch will be optimised for the handsets, so that users will be given
results not only as links, but as news and other data related to the search
query, such as cinema listings for film searches or score updates for sports
queries.
"With our innovative products and global partnerships we are a leader in
mobile search and are incredibly excited to bring Yahoo oneSearch to more and
more users every day," said David Ko, senior vice president of Yahoo Connected
Life.
"Together, T-Mobile and Yahoo are providing compelling mobile services, while
creating unique opportunities for advertisers to reach the rapidly growing
audience of mobile consumers."
The announcement is part of an ongoing effort between the two firms to
provide search functions for T-Mobile. In February, the companies announced that
Yahoo would
power
search functions for T-Mobile in 10 European countries.
The deal was seen at the time as a major coup for Yahoo, which beat rival
Google for the contract.
