Seagate claims fastest and greenest HDD

Savvio 15.2K aimed at lowering power consumption

Storage provider Seagate claims that its new Savvio 15K.2 HDD is the " world's fastest and greenest drive".

The new 15K-rpm drive will be added to the firm's Savvio family of server and enterprise storage drives designed for mission critical 2.5in applications which demand high reliability and performance but low power consumption.

The Savvio 15K.2 HDD will be offered in two capacities for servers, 146GB and 73GB, and has a SAS 2.0 interface running at 6Gbit/s.

Seagate said that the hard drives are ideal for RAID configurations, and ultimately provide up to 115 per cent greater system level performance when compared to systems based on 3.5 server-class drives.

"Server and storage array requirements in the enterprise today are especially focused on lowering power and cooling costs, satisfying growing application performance needs and meeting government and industry compliance regulations," said Sherman Black, Seagate Technology Core Products Group marketing and strategy senior vice president.

"The Savvio 15K.2 drive and our Unified Storage architecture address these needs head-on by providing IT departments with a best-in-class foundation that reduces storage complexity and costs, and provides peace of mind."

The drive is expected to begin shipping in December.
