Better tracking for off-site backup, claims firm

Removable data storage firm Imation is using RFID tags embedded into backup tape cartridges in order to help firms track the movement of each unit from the datacentre in transit and in the vault.

The new DataGuard rf Tape Tracking System is being demonstrated at the Storage Expo show currently underway in London.

Many companies store tape backups for security and management purposes, and there is always the threat that these backups will be lost or stolen in transit or at the archive storage facility, exposing organisations to the risk of data breaches.

By embedding RFID tags into each cartridge and integrating this into the serial number management system, these units can be more easily identified and tracked.

As well as aiding security, the use of RFID allows users to locate and manage the tapes a lot faster than with existing barcode-based systems, the company said.

"Now more than ever, media security within a datacentre is critical," said Branko Domic, Imation's brand manager.

"With our open interface software that syncs with any existing tape management system, data centre managers can enjoy the benefits of RFID without changing their existing tracking management system."
