Toshiba has joined the growing netbook market with its own mini laptop model, the NB100.

Like many similar systems announced recently, the Toshiba NB100 is based on a 1.6GHz Intel Atom mobile chip with up to 1GB memory, and runs Windows XP Home edition or Ubuntu Linux 8.04.

The former ships with Microsoft Works 8.5 and an Office trial, while the latter includes OpenOffice 2.4.

The NB100 has an 8.9in 1024 x 600 widescreen display and ships in three different colours: black, gold and silver. Toshiba claims a longer than average battery life for the device of up to three hours and 47 minutes.

Unlike the Asus Eee PC models, the Toshiba NB100 has a 120GB hard drive. It also has 802.11 b/g Wi-Fi, 10/100 Ethernet and three USB ports. It is expected to ship in October for about £260.
