PS3 firmware update adds online features

Trophies and in-game menu access added to console

The latest firmware update for Sony's PlayStation 3 will be available for download across Europe on 2 July.

Version 2.40 will allow users to access the XrossMediaBar (XMB) system navigation menu, as well as introduce 'trophies' similar to the achievements system used by the Xbox 360.

Gamers will be able to access the PS3's XMB main menu system while in game, allowing them to check whether friends are online, read and send messages and access other features without having to quit the game.

Furthermore, the Friends list capacity is being doubled to 100 as part of the update.
Trophies are also being added in order to recognise players' achievements in the online arena.

According to Sony, many online games will have gold, silver and bronze trophies, with platinum available for those who snag all three.

Super Stardust HD will be the first game to introduce the system and will offer a variety of trophies.

Games such as LittleBigPlanet, MotorStorm, Pacific Rift, NBA 09, Resistance 2 and Warhawk among others, will also be adding trophies in the near future.

Sony's new DualShock 3 controller for the PS3 also hits the shelves across Europe on 2 July. The new controller combines vibration with the existing SixAxis motion control.
