HP has unveiled 16 new notebook models along with a line of touch-screen PCs.

The TouchSmart PCs are designed to function as "post-traditional computers" and multimedia devices.

The systems carry integrated DVD burners and premium stereo speakers, and function with either a keyboard and mouse or through a touch-screen interface.

HP hopes that the TouchSmart range will appeal to users who increasingly rely on social networks, web-based multimedia sites and photo sharing sites for entertainment.

"Our engineers have created a fun, engaging and simple touch experience for the home that nobody else offers today," said John Cook, vice president of marketing at HP's worldwide consumer PC business.

"We are changing personal computing from just feeds and speeds to an experience influenced by consumer trends and design that anticipates customers' needs."

The new notebooks feature consumer and business models which sport either AMD Turion or Intel Centrino 2 processors.

The consumer models sport a new 'liquid metal' case design along with HP's ProtectSmart hard disk protection tool.

The 'Elite' business notebook line-up has a military-standard magnesium alloy chassis, along with improved locks and file protection software.

"HP is creating notebook computers that captivate users with striking design and the right features to deliver a great user experience," said Ted Clark, senior vice president and general manager of HP's notebook global business unit and personal systems group.

"Our new line-up further enhances our brand leadership with notebooks that are tailored for the ever-changing mobile lifestyle."

HP plans to being shipping the TouchSmart PCs and the new notebooks by next month.
