Sun and Fujitsu unleash UltraSPARC T2 Plus servers

Sun claims servers have 'jaw dropping' performance

Robert Jaques

Sun and Fujitsu today expanded their SPARC Enterprise server line with the introduction of the first systems based on the UltraSPARC T2 Plus processor.

The third-generation CMT SPARC Enterprise T5140 and T5240 servers are touted as being able to help customers consolidate datacentres. They both run the Solaris 10 Operating System (OS).

According to the companies these servers can deliver up to 16 times higher compute density than competitive two-socket x86 systems and up to 32 times higher compute density than competitive four-socket x86 systems.

"The performance and scalability we've designed into these new multi-socket systems with the UltraSPARC T2 Plus and Solaris is jaw dropping," said John Fowler, executive vice president, Systems Group, Sun Microsystems.

"In just two-and-a-half years we've increased CMT performance by over five-times without sacrificing space or power efficiency."
