Microsoft has begun a major reshuffle of its executives, adding 14 new vice president positions.

The company has appointed seven new senior vice presidents and seven corporate vice presidents who will oversee operations ranging from information worker products to "developer evangelism".

Microsoft hopes that the promotions will allow it to expand its operations and enter new fields.

The seven senior vice presidents will be in charge of Microsoft's information worker product management, Office business platform, Office productivity application, mobile communications business, search, portals and advertising, developer division, online services and Windows business operations.

The new corporate vice presidents will include a premium mobile services vice president in charge of working with developers from newly-acquired mobile software firm Danger.

"Each of these executives will play a critical role in leading Microsoft into the future," said chief executive Steve Ballmer.

"Today's promotions are a result of their ability to think strategically on a global scale, the respect they've earned from their peers, customers and partners, and their significant contributions to the company."

The new appointments come as Microsoft looks to expand its business reach. The company is continuing its pursuit of Yahoo, which earlier this week turned down a $44bn buyout offer.

Microsoft remains optimistic that it can reach a deal to acquire Yahoo.
