Apple launches new power machines

Expands retail presence to cope

Apple has expanded its hardware range with new desktop and server systems.

The Mac Pro desktop comes with two quad-core Xeon processors running up to 3.2GHz, doubling the power from the previous model. It is available with 4TB hard drive space and can carry up to 32GB of memory.

"The new Mac Pro is the fastest Mac we've ever made," said Philip Schiller, senior vice president of worldwide product marketing at Apple.

The base specification comes with 2GB of Ram and 320GB of storage and has a recommended retail price of $2,799.

The new server is the 1U rack-optimised Xserve that doubles power on the previous model. It comes with an unlimited client licence for Mac OS X Server Leopard.

"With the latest Intel processors and no client access licences, Xserve offers unbeatable server performance and value for under $3,000," said Schiller.

"Xserve's power, storage and Leopard Server make it ideal for supporting Mac clients and mixed platform workgroups."

The system comes with two quad-core Intel Xeon 5400 series processors running up to 3GHz, up to 32GB Ram and support for multi-channel 4Gb Fibre channel and 10Gb Ethernet cards.

Meanwhile Apple is expanding its retail presence to meet the increased demand. Best Buy has announced it is looking to double Apple sales this year and is expanding the amount of space it devotes to Apple products.

Best Buy has also been named as the official retailer of Macworld later this month.
