UK university looks to eBay for funds

Exeter runs unusual auction

Exeter University is trying a novel way of raising funds by selling old university signs on eBay.

The Exeter University Campus Signs auction, which ends tomorrow, hopes to raise money for the university's foundation, which supports scholarships, libraries and student volunteer training schemes.

The sale includes signs from the campus and halls of residence, and alumni are asked to purchase a piece of their history.

"More than 160 distinctive green signs that previously graced the campus are going under the hammer," the university said in a statement.

"Bids for the signs have been flooding in over the past few days, so act quickly if you want to rename your house 'The University of Exeter' or the 'The Great Hall'."

Bidding has been brisk so far, and some of the main 'Exeter University' signs have gone for more than £200. Other popular choices are signs for the University's theatre and the building that houses the student union's Ram Bar.
