Video clips from popular BBC television shows will be sold to O2's mobile phone customers, the two companies have agreed.

BBC Worldwide, the commercial arm of the BBC, will provide access to shows such as Little Britain, I'm Alan Partridge, The Office, Doctor Who and The League of Gentlemen.

The deal will also see other multimedia assets such as mobile phone wallpapers and ring-tones for sale through the O2 Active mobile portal.

Initially the BBC will provide 300 pieces of media to O2 with more to follow in the future.

Peter Mercier, head of mobile at BBC Worldwide, claimed that the deal gives O2 access to some of the best known and most loved TV brands.

"O2 is the largest UK operator by subscriber numbers so this is clearly a great deal for us," he said.

BBC Worldwide made a profit of £111m in the 2006-2007 tax year.
