Latest quad-core server chips arrive

Robert Jaques

Intel today lifted the lid off the latest additions to its quad-core Xeon server processor range.

Designed for companies running server and workstation applications, the Xeon X5365 is a 3.0GHz quad-core processor that fits inside a standard 120 watt power envelope. The component features a front-side bus (FSB) speed of 1333MHz.

The low-power L5335 chip runs at 50 watts – or 12.5 watts per processing core. It has a 2.0GHz clock speed and 1333MHz FSB.

Kirk Skaugen, vice president of Intel’s Digital Enterprise Group, and general manager of the Server Platforms Group, claimed that the company was now “essentially enabling price parity” between dual and quad-core Intel Xeon processors at a given clock frequency.

Priced in 1,000 unit quantities, the Xeon X5365 3.0GHz 1333MHz 120W costs $1172, while the L5335 2.0GHz 1333MHz 50W chip costs $380.
