John Smeaton, the baggage handler who tackled one of the Glasgow Airport terrorists on Friday, has had more than 600 pints bought for him by internet users around the world.

Smeaton was outside the terminal on a cigarette break when the bombers struck and immediately joined police in subduing the terrorists.

After he was featured on various news broadcasts, a website was set up with the goal of buying him 1,000 pints.

"The country needs to see 1,000 pints lined up on the bar at the Glasgow Airport Holiday Inn with John Smeaton's name on them," wrote the site's authors.

"JohnSmeaton.com will not rest till 1,000 pints are paid for and foaming on that counter. That is the tribute that the great man deserves for his act of heroism and community spirit."

Visitors to the site can pay £3 via PayPal to buy Smeaton a pint.
