Canada's Telus drops mobile porn

Telco caves in to Catholics

Iain Thomson

Canadian network operator Telus has bowed to pressure from the Catholic church and stopped sales of mobile porn to subscribers.

The company had been sticking to its guns over the sale of mobile pornography, but was facing an unprecedented attack from a local bishop.

Archbishop Raymond Roussin of Vancouver recently called for all Catholics to cancel their subscriptions to Telus, and the resulting publicity seems to have forced a rethink at the network operator.

Telus was the first mobile service in North America to offer adult downloads, for which it charged $3-$4 a pop.

The company said that, while thousands of people had used the service and only a few had cancelled, it had "taken the feedback to heart" and dropped the service.
