Samsung Electronics has announced two technology breakthroughs on the eve of the Computer Electronics Show in Las Vegas.

The company is promising the first double-sided LCD display, and a broadcast digital television system for cars and mobile devices.

Samsung's new double-sided LCD can show two entirely different pictures simultaneously on the front and back of the same 2.22in screen.

Yun Jin-hyuk, executive vice president at Samsung's Mobile Display Division, is predicting high demand when the company begins mass production in the first half of 2007.

"Our new double-sided mobile display underscores Samsung's commitment to equip our customers with advanced display technology that accelerates the trend toward slimmer mobile products," he said.

Samsung will also demonstrate new technology that can broadcast digital television signals to car screens and devices such as DVD, game and music players.

The company hopes that its Advanced Vestigial Sideband technology could be the basis of a standard for portable digital television, and has been working in association with the US Advanced Television Systems Committee

However, Samsung admitted that it is not close to shipping any commercial products based on the system.

The firm aims to work with broadcast companies to develop devices that allow people to carry portable TV devices other than mobile phones.
