Customers of the
Fifth
Third Bank in America were the most at risk from phishing attacks in August,
according to figures from antivirus firm
McAfee.
The top two institutions targeted in August accounted for a whopping 96.75
per cent of all phishing attacks.
Fifth Third Bank made up 60.47 per cent of the attacks, and 36.28 per cent
were sent to customers of the
Sun
Trust Bank.
Volks
Bank was identified in 2.52 per cent of the internet scams and
eBay featured in
fourth place at0.34 per cent.
Bank
of America,
Western
Union,
PayPal,
Nationwide,
Halifax
and the
Internal
Revenue Service made up the top 10.
The most prevalent internet threat for August was the
JS/Wonka
Trojan, which downloads other pieces of malicious software onto the victim's
PC.
Of the 761,559 PCs McAfee scanned in August, more than 42,000 were infected
with JS/Wonka.
