Big guns tune into DVB-H mobile TV

Emerging standard gains influential support

The momentum of the nascent DVB-H mobile TV standard has been boosted with the announcement that Nokia, one of the founding developers of the technology, has formed an alliance with Intel, Modeo, Motorola and Texas Instruments.

The firms have formed the Mobile DTV Alliance which aims to focus on promoting best practices and open standards for the delivery of mobile broadcast television based on DVB-H.

Support for DVB-H is growing worldwide. Back in November, the European Telecommunications Standards Institute announced that the DVB-H specification will be adopted as the European standard for mobile TV services.

In anticipation of the uptake of mobile TV, Nokia already has numerous ongoing trials in Europe and North America.

The DVT Alliance said that more than 10 DVB-H network trials have either concluded or are currently underway around the globe, including in Australia, Finland, France, Germany, Italy, the UK and the US.

The DVB-H specifications can be downloaded here.
