Fears are growing that fraudsters are planning to exploit the after-effects
of
Hurricane
Rita after a number of website registrations using the name.
Web monitoring firm
Websense is
warning that, even before the hurricane has hit the American mainland,
fraudsters may be gearing up to exploit any charitable effort that follows.
In the wake of the Hurricane Katrina disaster fraudsters proved more than
willing to try and scam the charitable out of their
donations.
"We have not yet captured a fraudulent email or website that is online,
however this is common as the storm is yet to hit," warned Websense.
"The names follow similar patterns to the Katrina scams as the terms 'rita',
'hurricane', 'disaster', 'relief' and 'donations' can be part of them. Most are
currently registered with bulk domains."
The company is advising people to donate money only to
registered
charities.
