Deutsche Telekom business unit T-Mobile has promised UK customers "true mobile broadband" after signing a deal to upgrade its network with next-generation 3G technology developed by Nokia.

Robin Lindahl, vice president, Networks, Nokia, described the technology being purchased by T-Mobile as a new technology evolution of current WCDMA 3G networks.

Under the terms of this agreement Nokia will deliver HSDPA equipment, as well as capacity expansions to T-Mobile's radio networks, to the operator in the UK, Germany and the Netherlands. Additional installation, commissioning and network optimisation services are included in the deal.

"Deploying the Nokia leading-edge HSDPA solution will enable us to offer true mobile broadband access and new services to our customers," said Joachim Horn, technical director, T-Mobile Germany and head of the international planning and engineering leadership team. "We will start the roll-out of HSDPA in Germany in 2006 and then extend it to the Netherlands and the United Kingdom."
