Adobe has launched the latest version of its popular PDF reader software, Adobe Reader 7.0, for the Linux operating system.

The free client software allows users to view and navigate Adobe PDF files across operating systems, hardware and mobile device platforms.

Adobe said that releasing a Linux client offers customers the ability reliably to view and print content across all major operating systems in the enterprise for the first time.

Adobe Reader 7.0 for Linux supports the Novell SuSE and Red Hat Linux distributions and is available for download here.

"The rate of adoption of Linux among enterprises worldwide is increasing, especially among government and financial services organisations," said Eugene Lee, vice president of product marketing at Adobe.

"Our customers were asking for Adobe Reader 7.0 on Linux as they begin to support core enterprise applications at the desktop."

The company claims to have distributed over 500 million copies of Reader since its introduction in 1993.
