US government approves Internet Society to manage fifth largest domain

The US Commerce Department has given its final approval for a not-for-profit company to take over the administration of the .org domain.
The Internet Society, and its technology partner Afilias, will manage the fifth largest domain name from the beginning of 2003 through their Public Interest Registry subsidiary.
Approval by the Commerce Department was the last hurdle, as it reviewed the financial and technical background to the bid.
The Internet Society is the home of two key internet standards-setting bodies, the Internet Engineering Task Force and the Internet Architecture Board.
David Maher, chairman of the Public Interest Registry, told The Washington Post that the company has been preparing to take over the .org domain for the past month, and is comfortable that the deadlines will be met.
