Hauppauge boxes clever with digital TV

Set-top device links to a PC for recording and playback

Hauppauge Computer Works has launched a product that brings digital broadcasts to any TV or PC.

The DEC2000-t is not the first digital device to provide free-to-air digital terrestrial broadcasts to TVs, but claims to be the first that links to a PC for added functionality.

When hooked up via the USB port, the bundled software allows the PC to replay recorded programmes.

Programmes can be recorded to disk and played back, or recorded onto a DVD-R drive for saving and playback on any DVD player.

The device can receive all 12 free-to-air digital terrestrial TV channels. This number will grow to more than 30 by the end of the year if the launch of Freeview, a consortium of the BBC, BskyB and Crown Castle, goes ahead.

The product retails at £129, but does not incorporate any digital rights management software.

Buyers are advised to check whether they have a digital signal in their area. This information is available by calling 0870 0106192 or visiting www.freetoview.co.uk.
