The BBC has taken the top honours in two categories - Best News and Best Radio - at this year's self-proclaimed Oscars of the internet, the Webbys.

Rounding out the list of international winners were Denmark's NetBaby for best games website, Australia's Lonely Planet Online for best travel site and Canada's Looplabs for best music site.

The sixth Annual Webby Awards, presented by the International Academy of Digital Arts and Sciences, featured 30 categories, including politics, education and 'weird'.

Reflecting the changing times in the industry, this year's ceremony was a mere shadow of its former self. Capacity for this year's event was reduced from the 3,100 of last year to just 316.

And Alan Cumming, the Tony Award-winning actor who has hosted the ceremony for the past two years, was also absent. Tiffany Shlain, the Webby Awards founder, and Maya Draisin, her business partner, took over the reins.

Other winners included The Osbournes for best television, Tolerance.org in the activism category, Yahoo Finance in the finance category, The Onion for humour, and Evite for services.

The search engine site Google took home the Best Practices Award, while online retailer Amazon won a Webby for the best commerce site.

The best health site award went to Teenwire.com, a website run by the Planned Parenthood Federation of America.
