Channel 4 is to increase its investment in Internet ventures, funding the launch of up to six online businesses.

The broadcaster said it will spend between £12 million and £15 million this year on online activities, compared with £3.5 million last year, and will also develop its interactive television content.

It will launch an entertainment portal offering interactive information on music, fashion, lifestyle and games, and will relaunch its existing website www.channel4.com. Horse racing and film sites are also planned, as well as a series of linked educational sites.

The first site will be aimed at gay and lesbian users and is scheduled to go live in February. It will feature news, entertainment financial advice and information, and listings.

"Channel 4 has done more than any other to stimulate the creative economy, and we feel we have a lot to contribute in the development of online media and interactive media," said Andy Anson, Channel 4's head of strategic planning.
