When you purchase a new PC, it is extremely fast, boots quicker than your previous machine and general computer use seems a lot more snappy. This isn’t simply down to the new and much faster hardware, it’s due to fact you have a fresh installed copy of Windows.

Why does your system slow over time? Every copy of Windows, from the original Windows through to Vista, has a component called the Registry which could be described as a central database of information. It stores information about Windows, the software you’ve installed and the different users that have access to your computer. The more users who have access to your machine and the more software you install (and uninstall), your Registry will enlarge with additional information, causing your machine to spend more time searching your Registry, which results in extra time taken to perform tasks.

As Windows doesn’t provide any automatic tools to enable you to compact or optimise your Registry, you’ll need a third-party tool such as Registry Mechanic. This is a wizard-driven tool that will enable you to perform a search for problems in your Registry and then make necessary changes, automatically. You don’t need to worry if anything goes wrong as Registry Mechanic will backup your existing Registry and even create a system restore point, so you can quickly revert back to a previous instance of Windows, if required.

If you want to keep on top of your Registry, you can choose to start Registry Mechanic when you boot your computer and it will quickly check for problems in the background and offer to fix potential problems.

The latest Registry Mechanic 2010 (v9) includes performance monitoring to improve your startup/shutdown times, an improved user interface and more.
