Wyse
Technology has introduced an ultra-mobile thin client designed to make it
easier for mobile workers to securely access datacentre-hosted virtual desktops,
as well as more traditional Citrix sessions and web-based enterprise
applications.
Available immediately, the
Wyse
X90cw is a mobile thin client with an 11.6in wide-screen display, Intel Atom
processor, and six-cell battery capable of providing up to eight hours of use
while away from the office, according to Wyse.
Laptop-style thin clients have been around for several years, but this
lightweight form factor is more convenient for mobile staff, Wyse said.
"The Wyse X90cw is the new wave of compact, lightweight, high-performance
internet devices that assures the end user experience is as good as, or better
than, a comparable PC, but the security of a virtual client means that it's now
more dangerous to misplace a smartphone than it is a computer," said Wyse vice
president of product management Ricardo Antuna.
Based on Windows Embedded Standard, the 1.4kg device has 802.11b/g/n Wi-Fi
and Bluetooth for connectivity, and supports 3G wireless adapters. It is
optimised for environments running Citrix XenApp and XenDesktop, Microsoft
Terminal Server and Hyper-V, and is expected to be certified for VMware View
within 30 days.
The Wyse X90cw costs $699 (£429).
Wyse also announced that its
TCX
technologies, which deliver a full PC-like experience in virtual desktop and
thin client environments, are now available in a single package at $35 (£22) per
seat.
TCX Suite 4.0 comprises Multimedia Acceleration, which streams media to the
endpoint for playback, Flash Acceleration, multi-display, and Client USB Port V
irtualisation, which makes USB devices connected to the terminal visible to
virtual desktops.
