RSA shuts down scam site

Job seekers scammed by shipping crims

David Neal

RSA Security's research lab, AKA FraudAction, has shut down a scam involving reshipping and cash mules.

In a blog post, the firm said the scam involved a recruitment ad on a bogus web site for a fake parcel delivery firm. Luckily, the web site was so riddled with errors that most people who were lured to it got wise to the con.

RSA said that "candidates" were asked to send in their personal information as part of the application process. Apparently, 1,900 people fell for the ruse and lost sensitive personal information as a result.

The company said the site contained several tell-tale signs of fraudsters at work. "For example," it wrote, "the copy written in English is not very good, and there is too much of it. A new warehouse is noted in Latvia, a country where fraudsters often dwell.”

The blog post concluded with the warning: "What makes these scams even more attractive is that they offer 'easy money' while working from home. While these jobs may sound alluring, they can oftentimes be completely illegal."
