Summit: Networks swamped by information overload

Alcatel-Lucent's Neal Tilley talks about how enterprises and carriers can take the strain

Ian Williams

Speaking to V3.co.uk as part of its Information Overload Summit, Neal Tilley, global solutions business development director EMEA for Alcatel-Lucent, gave his views on how businesses and operators can cope with the deluge of data being sent across their networks.

As one of the world's networking heavyweights, Alcatel-Lucent has a unique insight into how the accelerating levels of data usage and the growing number of bandwidth-hungry communication channels is impacting enterprise and carrier networks.

In his video interview with us, which will be posted up on the Summit web site on Wednesday, Tilley discussed how the lines between hardware and software, and those between enterprise, public and private networks, are beginning to blur.

He goes on to highlight the growing adoption of software-as-a-service and other hosted delivery models, as well as the proliferation of communication channels, as particular challenges for today's networks, and warns that this demand is only going to increase as the current generation of teenagers begin to enter the job market.

Tilley concluded that both fixed and mobile operators need to ensure that they become part of the content delivery value chain or risk becoming dumb pipes making little extra revenue while being burdened with ever greater traffic levels.
