Apple App Store hits 100,000 apps

Firm reaches yet another milestone

New figures suggest that there are now more than 100,000 applications available for download through Apple's App Store.

Apple has not yet officially announced the milestone, but iPhone app directory App Shopper said this week that there are now 102,000 applications on the site.

Apple is not usually slow to come forward with announcements about the popularity of its products and services.

The company sold one million tracks during the first week after launching its iTunes music service in June 2004, and its release on the Windows platform racked up one million downloads in the first three days.

Apple announced in April 2007, meanwhile, that it had sold 100 million iPods and some 2.5 billion songs.

The App Store has been trouncing records as well. The service broke the 500 million download mark in January just six months after launching, and had reached a billion downloads by April and two billion by September.
