Lite-On
has announced a new slimline DVD drive aimed at owners of netbooks or
ultra-portable laptops that generally lack a built-in drive.
Available from July for a suggested price of £35, the eTDU108 is a compact
external DVD-Rom drive that weighs 300g and is entirely USB powered, removing
the need to carry an external power supply.
Philips and Lite-On Digital Solutions marketing manager Jelmer Veldman said
that many external DVD-Rom drives disappeared from the market once DVD writers
appeared, but owners of lightweight systems such as netbooks often find they
need to install software from a DVD.
The eTDU108 is rated at 8x for reading DVD media and 24x for CD media,
according to the firm.
