Apple looking to shoot down Google Maps app for iOS

Apple Maps IOS 6

The Guardian has reported that Apple may not approve a Google Maps app for iOS 6.

According to the report, Google is hard at work at a Maps app for iOS 6. However, the company truly doubts that Apple would approve such an app. Googlers are even reportedly saying that the chance of Apple approving a Maps app is an "unlikely event".

If Apple refuses to approve a Google Maps app for iOS 6 it wouldn't be that surprising. The two firms have held grudges against each other for years. Apple recently dropped Google Maps from iOS in order to make its own mapping software. Google has also been fighting Apple in court over patent infringement for the better part of the year.

Maps have been a particular sore spot for Apple in recent months. The company released its own mapping app earlier this year to groans from consumers. Apple Maps was actually so disliked that company chief executive Tim Cook wrote an apology for the software.

Google has said in the past that it has no plans to build a maps app for iOS 6. However, a Google spokesperson recently said the company would like to get Maps on every device possible.

"We believe Google Maps are the most comprehensive, accurate and easy-to-use maps in the world," said the Google spokesperson.

"Our goal is to make Google Maps available to everyone who wants to use it, regardless of device, browser, or operating system."

The Google spokesperson declined to comment on whether Apple was building an iOS 6 maps app. But it would make sense if they did. Hypothetically, iOS users could use Google Maps and decided it's good enough to justify switching to Google's Android OS.

However, whether Google Maps for iOS 6 even gets to that point is anyone's guess.
