Microsoft warns on looming support deadlines

Microsoft has just issued a warning on several upcoming support cut-off dates for versions of Windows. The company also took the opportunity to urge customers to upgrade to the latest version, Windows 7.

The first deadline applies to the original RTM version of Windows Vista,  without any service packs installed, which will reach end of support on April 13.

Meanwhile, support is due to end on July 13 for both Windows XP SP2 and all editions of Windows Server 2000.

Also on July 13, all editions of Windows Server 2003 will move from the Mainstream Support phase to Microsoft's Extended Support phase. This means that free-of-charge support options are no longer available and that Microsoft will not provide hotfixes for any future issues other than those relating to security.

Microsoft recommends that those not ready to move to Windows 7 should at the least upgrade to the latest service pack for their operating system - either SP2 for Vista or SP3 for Windows XP.
